New Leaves

I started a pottery class. Wheel throwing 101 ;)

Yes: I have fantasies of being Edith Heath (fellow Iowan gal) and Beatrice Wood (SoCal artist who did not really even start producing her beautiful, unique and now immensely sought-after pottery until she was in her 40's. I'm 38).

I keep joking with my friends, somewhat half-seriously, that everyone I know shall be receiving wonky clay pots from me for the holidays. I'll stick some nice succulents in them, or if I'm inclined to make some tea cups- pair my creations with some dried mint & lemon balm from our garden.

Pictured: Gluten-free breakfast: Steel cut oatmeal with cinnamon, raw honey, almond milk, banana and berries, 1/2 cup coffee with almond milk, hardboiled egg.

I'm trying to eat gluten-free. I won't go so far as to say that I have a wheat allergy and that's why I'm doing this, but friends, maybe it is psychosomatic...some kind of placebo effect... I must admit since I have cut down on the wheat I feel my mood, digestion, sleep and energy has improved. I had to try something. I was feeling bad. I'm also trying to eliminate drinking alcohol, caffeine and eating refined sugar - which has helped greatly, too.

Trying to eat protein with every meal- which is difficult- since I don't like to eat a lot of meat.

If anyone knows of a great gluten-free blog/ website/ recipe--I'd love it if you'd pass them along.

Not really a new leaf, but sometimes it's good to try new things as a couple. We had a little date and ate at Raffi's Place last night for the first time. It was delicious. The place is huge- most of it in an open courtyard. I had the Chicken Koobideh--so good!! We ended our meal with fresh mint tea with plenty of lemon & sugar (I'm not perfect).

In addition to the enjoying the food, the parade of people that passed through the courtyard was amazing. Even though this is a very casual place, many of the women there were dressed to the hilt. Turbans and boldly patterned dresses, designer shoes and bags, leopard print caftans embellished with turquoise. In other words: totally over- the- top- Awesome. I thought I was overdressed when I left the house- wearing a sundress & heels--but no. Not compared to these elegant ladies. I blended in- if anything I was underdressed!

Now that the summer is coming to a close, what's upcoming & new for you?

Another peek of some ERMIE Fall & Holiday '11 textiles for you to enjoy over the weekend. I received some yardage yesterday and was playing with it, draping it and seeing what the prints will look like on the body.

On a more serious note: To all of my East Coast friends & family- please stay safe
. I hope the storm passes quickly & quietly!

Want/ Need

Yes, I make & wear my own clothes, but what can I say? I am loyal to my girls.

I am a member of the cult of Comey.
I'd wear this brown dress to death, the green would be more of a special occasion type piece--maybe for Tomory's show in Switzerland this winter?

I try not to do too many posts about material things that I acquire, but when it relates to indie designers whose work I adore...I feel like it's OK. But I still interjected some photos of the non- material variety for a little balance:)

1,2: Odette NY Pod ring. A generous gift from one of my very favorite designers.

4,5: From a little exchange with Martha. These photos truly do not do her work justice. But I felt like if I didn't post about the dress now- I never would. You can get a better sense of the rich and subtly varied color of the dress in pics 1,2 --it's the "backdrop" for Jennifer's ring.
This is a felted wool piece, but it's so soft and cozy. I especially love the cut of the garment. I'd never wear it IRL like I am in the pics above. If I'm brave enough- I'll wear it with some super opaque black tights & cool flats for Fall. I wish the temperatures would co-operate here in SoCal so I could wear this beauty NOW.

8,9: Also from Odette NY, from the upcoming Fall/Winter line- this Arrow Bracelet. I also got one in brass to give to my BFF for her birthday so we'll match. I've been wearing mine non-stop! I can't wait to see what else Jennifer has in store for this F/W.

Have you acquired anything recently that you are loving? Do share.

Have a wonderful weekend!
xx

Even though comparatively- it may seem like we have eternal summer here in SoCal, I do feel like the season is coming to a close. The days are a little shorter, the nights a little cooler.

Just a reminder: today is the last day to order S/S '11 items from the shop. After today, I'll be closing the store temporarily to pull together the F/W collection.
Which I'm really excited about. I'm collaborating on some projects with a few ladies and gents--hoping it will all turn out. I'm shooting for the collection to be up mid to late October. As always, I'll post announcements and updates here.

In the meantime, enjoy the sale and the rest of your summer!
