Therapy

Watching Huell and knitting Sunday night. I'm like a little old lady!

I forgot about the click-click- click of the knitting needles. The downy layer of fuzz that sometimes ends up all over your clothing as you knit.
The pace of knitting is so different from sewing. Knitting is much slower. You can't help but slow down overall.

When I worked in the mental hospital, many patients enjoyed knitting and crocheting. I think because it can transform anxious energy into a slower, more even pace...it's calming. It can be repetitive & meditative, but depending on what you are making, there are times when you have to count & focus. It's very hard to concentrate & focus on anything when you are anxious or depressed...but knitting kind of sucks you in. It is almost addictive! It's comforting to feel something soft and warm between your fingers.

Patients would have to knit seated in front of the nurses station due to the potential hazards of sharp needles and lengths of yarn. It was a bit of a pain to try to keep my eye on them while I was trying to chart, pass meds, assist other patients etc. but when someone wanted to knit or crochet, I would try to find a way for the patient to do it, even though it created a little extra work for me, because I understood that it would usually result in them feeling better.

I knew there was a reason why I liked these Isabel Marant pieces.

Must be the Gen-Xer in me.

It cooled off here, thank goodness. Bit of fall chill in the air in the early morning and evenings, although it does not really feel like autumn here in L.A. until the rain begins usually around December.

I'm going to take full advantage of the cooler temperatures and start a sweater. Never knitted a sweater before. I'm going to try this one (6th photo, pictured above) from Joelle Hoverson's Last- Minute Knitted Gifts. The sequel to this book is out now...I should really order it. Hoverson is so brilliant with her use of color. The images of the striped blanket & The coffee cozies are projects from the new book.

What I wore yesterday to run errands. I was struck by how much of it was hand- made by local artisans (and myself).

Hand-dyed tank and long beaded necklace by Hadley Holliday.
I wore the tank over this dress, that I made, from fabric designed by my husband and me...
Pink Wrist Wrap and Messenger Tote by Clare Vivier.

***Hadley will be selling her work today at the Local Artisan Bazaar (LAB).

Now Playing

Alive As You Are
13 Most Beautiful_ Songs For Andy Warhol's Screen Tests
the secret migration
Anthology
Blue
I have been able to get into music again since quitting my day job.

There was a period of about 3 years or so where I did not listen to music.
It was a sad period.

So, now listening:
Darker My Love, Alive As You Are. Local band. Love this record -The Byrds Sweetheart of the Rodeo meets The Grateful Dead. Psychedelic Awesomeness.

13 Most Beautiful
. See this post. I heart Dean and Britta. Their cover of the VU's "I'm Not A Young Man Anymore" kills. The instrumental pieces on this album are great. "It Don't Rain In Beverly Hills" is also a highlight.

Because of Lisa Cholodenko: Mercury Rev's "In a Funny Way" from their album The Secret Migration and Joni's "All I Want" from her classic album Blue.
The Mercury Rev song is used in the opening credits of Cholodenko's film Laurel Canyon...besides Frances McDormand's performance, the opening credits were my favorite part of this film- 3 minutes of Los Angeles perfection. The Joni Mitchell song is featured in Cholodenko's new film, The Kids Are All Right, which I have yet to see.

Because of Linger & Quiet: Steve Miller Band's song "Journey From Eden." Check out Linger & Quiet's brilliant free podcasts if you haven't already done so.

Also- IRM, Charlotte Gainsbourg. No explanation needed really- she just may be the chicest woman alive.

Portishead's "The Rip" love it when this song gets all synth-y. From their album Third.

Chemical Brothers " K+D+B" from their album Further
.

Avi Buffalo's self titled album. They are cute.

So- what have you been listening to?

Sometimes I like wandering around the neighborhood & snapping photos.

I have to say, my friends rock. New and old (you know who you are). Keeping me company while T. is traveling.

!!! Along those lines: Please check out Emilyn's blog, Supercozy. She is a smart and talented lady. We had a lovely coffee date today. It is a bit novel for me- going out for coffee...sappy but true. I wasn't able to do that at all (no energy/time) when I was working as a nurse.

*(As we used to say in Minnesota. Imagine saying it with a "Fargo"-esque accent.)

Play It As It Lays

Play2

Last Friday, I saw the film version of Joan Didion's Play It As It Lays.
It was late, the theater seats were terribly uncomfortable, my dates were all exhausted (sorry guys) but I loved this movie.
It's a dark film (the book is even darker... but overall the film is pretty true to the book), but I enjoyed seeing bits of long gone and not -so- long- gone L.A.

The 70's clothing (the film was shot in 1972) : amazing. Tuesday Weld looked stunning. Tie-dye. Big Sunglasses. Fitted leather jackets. Caftans galore.

But the best part of the film (here we go... I know I'm gonna get crap for this) was Anthony Perkins. Yes. That's right. Norman Bates-Psycho- Anthony Perkins. The man had the best lines and performance in the film, and if I do say so myself, looked downright hot.
I also say "whatever" to the hipsters who snickered at the scene where Perkins enters wearing gigantic, black, wraparound sunglasses. You wish you could pull that off.

The film is not on DVD, so if it happens to be playing in your area, I recommend trying to see it.

Quince from the yard that I used as a prop in these photos.

Giant Clouds. I wish we had thunderstorms in Los Angeles.

I made a skirt featuring the Bokeh Print in cotton lawn (fully lined!).

** Edit: More views here.
Thanks for all of the comments! I still like the blouse, too...may re-shoot it. I think the sun in the original post washed out the print on the shirt, plus, I was too lazy to iron.
The semi-shade of the porch in these new photos helps the print to appear more as it does in real life. Good photos of FO's make all the difference!

You may see the skirt in the ERMIE F/W Holiday Collection ;)

Wiksten Dress Pattern

I made this dress with Liberty fabric I bought in London this past spring. The pattern is Jenny Gordy's (Wiksten). The instructions were clear and very easy to work with. It's a fun pattern that you can whip up a dress from in an afternoon.
If I make another dress from this pattern, I'd probably lengthen it a bit for modesty (I have a long waist which tends to make shift dresses more like tunics on me) and omit the pocket (not a criticism, just personal preference).

It was hot when I took these. I wanted to stand in the shade. I may try to take some other, less shadowy shots later.

Worn with Tina Petra's necklace that a special someone gave me. Sad he will be traveling apart from me for a bit. I hate it when he's gone.

The rich colors and clean styling in these photos from Quince & Co. are making me want to knit - even though it is going to be over 100 degrees here this week!
You can peruse their beautiful yarns and PDF downloadable patterns for scarves, sweaters, gloves and more (about $6.00 per pattern- cheap!) here.
