Giveaway: Shabd Simon-Alexander

You may have noticed that the work in my most recent collections has been focusing on hand dyed textiles, especially those using tie dye techniques. I learned the art of tie dyeing from my mom when I was a child growing up in the 70's and 80's. I also credit Shabd Simon- Alexander with opening my eyes to the possibilities of modernizing this ancient craft, and using it in new and vital ways. I had the pleasure of taking an introduction to Fiber Reactive Dyes class with Alexander, (who is an excellent teacher), about a year ago at Oooga Booga, here in Los Angeles.

To celebrate the immanent release of the entirety of ERMIE Collection 2, 2013, I am giving away a copy of Shabd's recently published book, Tie-Dye- Dye It, Wear It, Share It

People often ask me what resources I recommend as an introduction to some of the various techniques I use, and I can finally say that this is the perfect book for that purpose! It's bright, beautifully designed, easy to understand, colorful, informative and inspiring.

Just leave a comment here, under this post, about a craft or craft technique that you have been wanting to explore, by 12:01 am PST , 8/14/13. Make sure I have a way to contact you!

I will draw the name of one winner at random, & announce it here on 8/15/13. I will send the book to the winner, free of charge to anywhere in the world.

Good luck, and thank you to Shabd, and Potter Craft, and Random House for making this give-away possible!

xx

The Winner is Alisha! Thank you everyone for your wonderful comments. I wish you all happy & fruitful creating.

I've used color in food (pastry), in canvas art and now I'm exploring it on textiles!! This book would be a great addition to my mini collection before I start getting my hands dirty - pun intended!

I still remember making tie dye shirts with my best friend, back in the 90s...only yesterday I made a cover for an old sofa with some self acquired shibori like technique! ;-)
Next on my list is definitely some wood carving! All those beautiful spoons all over instagram have got me hooked!

Happy Birthday, Jen! This book looks great and makes me nostalgic for the tie-dyeing we did at summer camp when I was a kid. (Sigh.) I've been giving a ton of thought to dyeing my photographs, but need a kick in the book. Not sure this book would help, but it looks rad! What a generous birthday girl you are!!
Much love...

So many where to choose. Thanks Jen for the great post. I would like to explore dying natural blended fabrics, that have mixes of wool and cotton and silk. I had a a dying accent a year back that gave me this idea. I was trying to do a solid dye and the fabric was a blend and it came out with a beautiful heathering effect.

I'd love to explore that further. xx Angelina (aka lina rennell)

Tie dying is on the list, of course, but I want my knitting skills to be intentional.I tend to dive into projects that force me to learn new stitches but I couldn't tell you anything about swatching or gauges etc :)

I'd like to do more watercolor this year, besides knitting. The book must be interesting, quite similar to watercolors.
(in case I'm the happy winner :))), I'll be on internet-free vacation after 8-12-13 for 3 weeks).
Love the bits of your new collection, your work is an inspiration, thank you!

I did a collection for an university project last year that was based on dying with natural products, such as wine, curcuma, tea... I got some very interesting shades.
We also did a bag out of fabric that we dyed with shibori tehnique.

But I would still like to learn a lot more about tie dying, as I know very little, and I think her work is excellent!
