    That bird is very scary for first thing in the morning. It's been a while since I have seen a raw chicken! That is a chicken, right?

    I figured it would gross some of my readers out. Not my intention though :)

    The chicken had a good life. Apparently a "Pasture Raised" local bird. I grew up surrounded by small farms that kept chickens in Iowa- so a plucked bird doesn't really gross me out...

  3. It's fine, truly. I can handle a bald looking chicken. People eat chicken, that's life! I'm just used to such different photos on your blog.

  4. Belinda, no worries! :) Really! I meant no offense :) So sorry if I did! I have a hard time communicating sometimes- especially via the typed word!

    We'd never eaten a pasture raised chicken before- free range yes; pasture raised no -- I guess there is a difference-- although we couldn't really tell :)

    T and I had just cleaned the house, I stepped out on the porch & saw those crazy clouds. The wind picked up and it became very cold. A downpour & hailstorm began soon after. Meanwhile, T. was inside preparing dinner. The house was warm & filled with the smells of cooking. The contrast between being outside & being inside was just so tangible at that moment. It didn't occur to me that the chicken might not be very enticing until after I posted.
    Maybe I've been looking at Sally Mann's "Body Farm" photos too much ;)

  5. When I saw your post, I said to M: "They're having chicken too!" We made a fire and cozied together to make a nice chicken dinner last night. N cut a bunch of green beans and I made croissants, while M made the chicken and root veggies. It was such a good night for it. The picture of T got M & I into a conversation about washing chickens before cooking. He said he doesn't because Jacques Pepin doesn't. This is supposedly a long-standing disagreement between Pepin and Julia Child. Anyway, your post incited a lively conversation here, as we enjoyed our roast chicken. ;)

  6. Who knew that little chicken would inspire so much conversation?

    Had not heard about the Pepin vs. Child (to wash or no?). We rinse it because that's the way I was taught. To supposedly rinse of any harmful bacteria. But really, you shouldn't have to- just roasting at the proper temp for 1-2 hours will definitely kill any remaining bacteria on the bird.

  7. Supposedly, health officials (I sound so official!) believe washing chickens before cooking spreads more bacteria around the kitchen, and that the oven heat does the job well enough -- better even. We can discuss this more next time we all get together for dinner. ;)
