I have exactly the same problem where I work....Ugh! I have exactly the same problem where I work. No denim, but neat and semi-professional. I agree, it can feel like a costume. And most button downs either make me feel like a total square, or like I've been sent to the Gulag. I am a big fan of cords, black jeans, and cardigans, and I heavily skirt the rules otherwise.
